Antique Store Closing, Ambiguous Signage Goes Up

Ant

Ages Past Antiques at 450 East 78th Street (near York) is packing it in and they’re currently having a big blow-out sale. Tipster Harvey relays the store’s last day, Jan 30 via the sign in their window and writes "i guess there is some bad blood cause the sign in the door says 'closing up shop... thanks dick!'" I'm going to guess it's simpy the guy's name, but you can be the judge.

Your Car Might Have Been Towed

Ghosttownsuck

If you’re one of the squatters who parks for days at a time on 77th or 78th near York, your car may have been towed this morning, and you can thank the “Ghost Town” filming for that one.

Luckily, it probably isn’t that far away. The car pictured above was towed and dumped about a block away, on Second Ave. You have about a day to get the car before you start getting fined, according to the sticker slapped on the windshield.

Cabin Fever Closes

Cabinfever

Folks, according to the sign draped across the front of Cabin Fever, on York between 76th and 77th, the place is done. If you’re in the market for some Cabin Fever nostalgia, it appears they’re holding a sale. No word yet on what exactly went down.

For those not familiar with Cabin Fever, good reviews and strong word-of-mouth -- not the bar's forte. It can be better described as the type of place where a local band, by the name of Tighty Whitey, would let 'er rip on some Rage Against The Machine tunes.

Hawaii Sushi Closes, Moves To York

Sushifinal

Hawaii Sushi closed up shop on 77th and 2nd and moved to to York between 85th and 86th after being open for about a year and a half.

Not a shocking development considering the intense competition -- four other sushi spots within a few blocks and another on the way.

If you can't go without your Hawaii Sushi fill, they are still delivering according to the sign on the side door.

Welcome!

September is here and with the new month: we present our new website.

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who’s been reading 78thand2nd over the past three months.  In August we saw a traffic tally that was 10 times that of June and we appreciate everyone who has dropped by, emailed in, commented and tipped us to neighborhood happenings.  It’s been a true pleasure to this point and I hope to hear from you all moving forward.

As for the new site, the biggest change is that we now have some ads, something we couldn’t do on a Wordpress blog.  The content of the site will stay the same, but we have a slightly different look, a result of exiting from Wordpress.

We’ll be tweaking the new site in the coming days: fixing broken links, categories, adding a search function, features, and dealing with the typical growing pains of moving to a new server.

For those changing bookmarks – the url 78thand2nd.com will point to the new site in a day or two.

Again, thank you to everyone who’s visited over the past three months – I look forward to the coming ones!

Thanks,

Chris

What’s The Deal With: Old Chambers Store, Bodega On 73rd, 79th & York Revealed

aug15.jpg
Old Chambers store, 76th and 2nd

Last week we spotlighted some of your recent UES store front inquiries -- and below check out the info gathered to this point. Thanks to everyone who responded in the comments and via email.

1) 76th and 2nd: Robert wrote "Any idea what is coming to the old Chambers store spot on 76th and 2nd? Heard a rumor that it is leased by the owner of Mo’s Caribbean…hope it is not yet another bank or cell phone store."

The space is currently under construction (click through to find a pic inside the spot) and according to 78thand2nd commenters CK and Ace it looks like Pottery Barn Kid’s clothing is setting up shop. From Ace:

Right on about the PB Kids store. A little more info- Williams Sonoma- part of the of Pottery Barn corporation has absorbed the Chambers stores into the new Williams Sonoma Home stores- the new Chambers line was just introduced in their catoalogs. No stores open here yet but slated for later this year (higher end PB merchandise). So there won’t be any more Chambers stores.

2) 73rd and 1st: Michael asked “I was wondering if you knew what was going to take the place of the bodega that recently closed on the northeast corner of 73 & 1? i was out of town for four or five days, and on my return i noticed that my corner store was gutted. there wasn’t any notice.”

I'm afraid to report that this one's a little bit of a mystery right now. 78thand2nd checked in with a few the businesses near this bodega, and shot a call to mgmt of the building, but no light is shed on the store's quick closing or what's coming. We'll follow-up on this soon.

3) 79th and York: Adam asked “something is brewing on the northeast corner of 79 and York, previously inhabited by the Chase bank that moved across York a few months ago.” Anyone have an idea what’s going in?

Adam, there are a couple names being thrown around with regards to the space previously held by Chase Bank -- Duane Reade and Northfork Bank. Duane Reade seems logical since they're right next store and grabbing this spot would expand their floorspace, but some locals claim a Northfork Bank is headed in.
