91st Street between 2nd and 3rd has been blocked from traffic for the past 30 years and the result has been the creation of a mini “park” in the heart of the neighborhood. This stretch is near sacred to residents and tends to incite some strong opinions -- just check out the mere hint of running a bike path down the tiny stretch last summer and you get an idea of the passions the street can stir.
Why bring this up? The East 91st Street Task Force is set to meet tonight at the Stanley Isaacs Center on 93rd to review the “different designations available for streets that are closed to traffic, with their precise legal definition” and “procedures and timing for getting each of those designations” among other things. I’d be lying if I said I knew what all this meant, but I envision the night including at least one tirade that begins with fist pounding and the words “I just have to get this off my chest...”
No plans tonight? Then please attend; details below.
